Taking Center Stage: All About The Center for the Arts & Sciences

Lake Jackson is a cultural jewel on the crown of the Texas Gulf Coast, and there is no better evidence of that than The Center for the Arts & Sciences. Housing five different arts and sciences organizations, The Center is owned and operated by the Brazosport Fine Arts Council (BFAC). BFAC is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that operates The Center and provides performance and exhibit space, marketing resources, and fundraising support to the groups. In this blog, we tell you about these fabulous five organizations and all of the fun, family-friendly events that they host year-round!

Brazosport Art League

The Brazosport Art League is made up of 170 artists, scholars, and admirers. The League works to inspire the public with art by local, regional, and internationally renowned artists over the course of 10 annual shows in the Art Gallery located at The Center. Additionally, the League hosts workshops and classes for both established artists and beginners of all ages. A fun way to feed your creativity is with the Art League’s Paint-n-Sip events. These events include all supplies, instruction, and something to eat and drink, and give you the chance to go home that night with your own original piece of art.

Brazosport Planetarium

The Brazosport Planetarium has been home to educational and entertaining presentations for countless youth, adults, and families over the decades. In addition, the Planetarium, named the BASF Planetarium after its generous sponsor, has even opened its doors to NASA astronauts to help them learn about star navigation with its state of the art technology (click here to learn more). About five times a month, and even more frequently in the summer, the Planetarium hosts spectacular shows that showcase the beauty and complexity of the physical universe. These shows are sure to entertain, as well as inform while utilizing the Planetarium’s incredible dome technology.

Brazosport Symphony Orchestra

Lake Jackson is an extremely musical city, and the Brazosport Symphony Orchestra (BSO) is a huge reason why! The BSO performs classical standards, pop arrangements, and world-premiere pieces each year at Lake Jackson’s world-class concert venue, The Clarion, which is located right across the street from The Center. This stretch of the Gulf Coast has an impressively large demographic of classical music fans, and BSO works to celebrate the traditions of symphonic music while also making it accessible to the LJ community and beyond.

Brazosport Museum of Natural Science

LJ’s Gulf Coast location and proximity to the beach make it the perfect place to explore the natural sciences, and one of the best places in town to do so is the Brazosport Museum of Natural Science. Home to dinosaur exhibits, fossils, rocks, and an impressively big seashell collection, the Museum works to expose the public to the wonders of our natural world.

Brazosport Center Stages

The last, but certainly not least, organization at The Center is Brazosport Center Stages (BCS). BCS is an exceptional community theater and happens to be the longest-operating community theater on the Texas Gulf Coast. The Center produces five shows a season that typically include comedies, dramas, and musicals. The shows are meticulously selected by the Center Stages’ board of directors and always feature a family-friendly summer musical that is performed in the Freeport LNG Theater, The Center’s excellent proscenium style theater.
