Out in the Wild: All About The Wilderness Golf Course

Nestled among beautiful greenery off of TX-332, The Wilderness Golf Course is a staple of Lake Jackson. The course was founded in 2004 and over the years has established itself as one of the best courses in all of Texas. Known as “Texas’ best kept secret,” the course was recently honored by the Golf Advisor – Golfer’s Choice list as the #1 public golf course in Texas and as #40 in the United States. In this blog, we tell you all about what this magnificent golf course has to offer!

One of the characteristics of The Wilderness that makes this course so unique is its landscaping. The property is expertly manicured, and its 18 holes are nestled perfectly in the iconic wetlands that run throughout Lake Jackson and the Texas Gulf Coast. These beautiful 240 acres of land create a golfing experience that is one-of-a-kind and memorable. Additionally, true to its name, The Wilderness, golfers are often graced by deer and other woodland animals that frequent the property, creating an even more fun and unconventional golf experience.

A golf course would be little without its Pros, and The Wilderness has some of the best of the best. Collectively, the team at The Wilderness has almost 75 years of professional golf experience under their belts. Doug Borow, The Wilderness’ general manager, received the Texas PGA’s President Plaque in 2010 for his relentless dedication to the Southern Texas PGA and its “Play Golf America” campaign. He is also committed to keeping “Kids Play Free” and “Free Lesson” opportunities alive at The Wilderness and keeping young golfers in the game. John Stark, the course’s head golf professional, also plays an integral part in the success of The Wilderness. A Lake Jackson native, he came to work professionally at The Wilderness shortly after college and has been an extremely valuable member of the award-winning Wilderness Golf Course Team for more than 15 years.

The Wilderness offers a wide variety of rates and passes, including annual and corporate passes, and special pricing for seniors and military, police, and firemen. The corporate membership is perfect for those who travel in town for business and even more so for the people who host them. The Wilderness also offers the opportunity to become a member of the Wilderness Golf Association (WGA). Being a member of the WGA provides you with consistent discounts on entrance fees for events and tournaments, early access to twilight and super twilight rates, and participation in the designated annual pass and “WGA-only” events. There’s no doubt that the Wilderness memberships are worth your while, whether you’re an LJ local or a visitor who loves a good round of golf.

One of The Wilderness’ other major priorities is player development. Each summer, it hosts three weeks of junior golf camps and a PGA (Professional Golfers’ Association) Junior League. The program is designed to be fun, inclusive, and introductory, while also keeping young golfers challenged and engaged. These programs are available to kids 13 and younger, and the kids play in the popular scramble format.

The Wilderness is more committed than ever to the safety of their golfers, taking many extra precautions to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Walking this stunning course is now highly encouraged, and if a golf-cart is necessary, they are keeping it to double riders unless specifically requested. Check-in now takes place at the golf shop window side of the clubhouse, and only credit cards are being accepted in lieu of cash. Additionally, all rakes, ball washers and coolers have been removed and flagsticks remain in cups at all times.

The Wilderness store and snack bar are following suit as well. Food and beverages are now available by call-in and for curbside pick-up, and the clubhouse and deck dining areas are being kept to under a 50% capacity. Face masks are also required to access the indoor areas of the facility.

Although adapting to the current circumstances can be difficult, The Wilderness continues to thrive. On its Facebook page you can find fun virtual features like “Pro-Tip Tuesdays” with golf pro, John Stark. In his most recent video he explains the technique behind high-spin shots and how to get them to land softly on the green. Talk about some awesome insight! They also provide links to enter raffles for high-end golf gear and other goods.

With so many ways to golf and stay connected, it’s easy to see why The Wilderness has received so much acclaim from golf professionals and enthusiasts, so we want you to come experience it for yourself.
